Canadian Historical Work : Romancing The Landscape

February 3-24, 2022

“I dream only of Canada. The motif remains fixed in my mind, and I don’t allow myself to be captivated by the charms of a new landscape. In Switzerland, Scandinavia – everywhere, I recall my French Canada.”

Clarence Gagnon (1887-1942)

With Valentine’s day around the corner, we at Petley Jones Gallery are celebrating the love of the landscape that these distinct Canadian artists fostered and shared with the world through their work. Many of these artists chose to study and travel overseas to learn their craft – however they were inexplicably drawn back to the Canadian landscape. The adoration of the North fed their inspiration and is clearly rooted within each piece.

“Our art is founded on a long and growing love and understanding of the North in an ever clearer experience of oneness with the informing spirit of the whole land and a strange brooding sense of Mother Nature fostering a new race and a new age…”

Lawren Harris
