Water and Sky / New Work

View Paintings

In the last two years I moved in to the unknown to create the new…without the familiar boundaries I used the waterfall and its energy as a subject as I explored new ideas, images and mediums. The constant between the old and new work is the light from within; present in my past encaustic work and now adding energy and mystery to the new paintings which are encaustics and oils on canvas.

Alex Nickbe

Alex Nickbe has been a keen observer of biological systems for over 40 years.

His table designs incorporate the notion of biomimetics concentrating on the processes of self-renewal, diversity and change. Circular forms that characterize his work are used to symbolize the continuity of nature’s cycles while the structural variations evident within his compositions equate to natural diversity. Portrayal of change is accomplished by different sightlines that are exposed with each new perspective from which a table is viewed.

With these devices, Alex Nickbe makes it possible to introduce the spiritual essence of our evolutionary habitat into the settings of everyday living. The Nickbe table epitomizes an interactive art form that not only encourages individual creative expression but also awakens a higher level of human awareness of the remarkable biology of our planet.

Ann Nelson

In Sweden (my grandparent’s home) there is a word, “smultronstallet”. Translated literally it is “the place of wild strawberries,” but it means much more than that: it is a secret place, discovered, treasured, shared with friends. (The wild strawberries are only implicit; they suggest themselves because of their rarity and beauty.)

Smultronstallet is any personal wonderland that has somehow singled itself out from ordinariness and become free from the bewilderment of the outside world. It is filled with meaning, with compelling humor and gentleness.

Some vital spirit has been uncovered; somehow here the way of the universe has been apprehended and given actuality. “Magic is afoot, God is alive.” Familiar forms take on new aspects, evoke new resonance. Everywhere there is a delightful purposelessness, undiscovered secrets.

An affectionate bond (Thoreau called it “an infinite and unaccountable friendliness”) grows between person and place. One embraces and is embraced. Life is affirmed. It is to be celebrated.

Phil Mann

These paintings are about the tension that is created when one views the gestural area pressing against the panels of colour, competing for attention. Colour is used to enhance the mood of the painting, and adds to the tension between the flat panels of colour and the gestural areas of the paintings.

My work is influenced by the abstract art scene that came out of New York in the sixties and seventies – artists such as Gottlieb, Motherwell and Newman. I am also influenced by Doug Haynes, Robert Sinclair and Jack Bush.

My paintings are meant to be viewed in their entirety; it is the interplay of colour and shape, coupled with the painting’s composition, that creates an evocative feeling. Every brush stroke is integral to the cohesion of the whole. – Phill Mann

Amelia Alcock-White

About the Artist

Born 1981 on Vancouver Island in Ladysmith, BC. Amelia Alcock-White studied at The University of Vancouver Island and Emily Carr University. She has received several awards for her work, including Scholarships and Art Faculty Awards. Alcock-White’s paintings have been the subject of numerous solo and group exhibitions. Her work is represented in public and private collections in Canada, the United States and Hong Kong.
Amelia’s paintings express the human condition and its relation to nature, the transitory character of time and the contrasting endurance of elemental forces. Psychological themes, primal emotions and archetypal figures all play a role in her works. Amelia fuses sentiment, intimacy and warmth with the enigmatic, giving her images an emotional subtlety that draws the viewer into her private world.
