The Journey Series by Duncan Regehr

Each painting in “The Journey” series by Duncan Regehr conveys a specific moment that is a representation of an inner journey. Whether it is a journey of fate, a dream journey or a metaphysical journey, subjects are travelers on their way from one place to another or have arrived at a crucial moment of destiny.

We tend to look upon our lives, our journeys, as a series of connected episodes. The activities of daily life are not generally recognized as being important to the path of destiny. However, we are always at the threshold of destiny. When we experience an impactful moment, be it one of coincidence, karma, epiphany, or tragedy, we become aware of our journey.

Many of the works draw upon the power of a single figure navigating a broad landscape; as in “Shelter”, which isolates a woman caught in a storm, or “Sancho”, in which a child envisions his future quest. The spare environments offer minimal detail, as do the figures. This ambiguity invites viewers to offer their interpretation.

Media

“The Journey” series by Duncan Regehr uses oil and complex layers of mixed media to build narratives that relate to epic journeys from myth, history and the classics.

Display

The work is often displayed alongside published poetry from the multidisciplinary artist. The viewers experience painting and verse come together. The mastery of multimedia invites the viewer deeper into the myths and legends of his journeying subjects. The juxtaposition of poetry and painting elicits our own journey into the artwork, as witnesses of the transformation.
