Artist Feature: Amelia Alcock-White
Amelia Alcock-White’s residency at the Pouch Cove Artist Residency, in St. John’s, Newfoundland culminates in a solo exhibition at the Petley Jones Gallery in the fall of 2022.
“I’m excited to share the news that I’ve been awarded an invitation to The Pouch Cove Artist Residency in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Thanks to Nova Scotian artist Katherine Burns and the James Baird Gallery for including me in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to paint the East Coast with a curated group of talented water painters,” Amelia announces.
Amelia Alcock-White is diving into a new collection of paintings that highlight the currency of water’s intrinsic value. Combining wit and political commentary, her solo exhibition in the fall is entiteld, “Current Sea”. Presenting the concept of water as more than a mere material asset, her series renders perspective on decisions that trade pristine nature for economic gain.
Her residency in Newfoundland is simultaneously abstract and hyperreal. Images of the sea and freshwater lakes, render intricate compositions, vibrating with depth and motion. Dramatic colours, stylized ellipses, reflected patterns on glittering surfaces recreate the physics of water’s elegant flow. These images move beyond water’s material worth, a transcendence that depicts this vital ecological entity as a substance of sheer beauty.
Be transported to the water’s edge and experience the sea’s current.
