These paintings are about the tension that is created when one views the gestural area pressing against the panels of colour, competing for attention. Colour is used to enhance the mood of the painting, and adds to the tension between the flat panels of colour and the gestural areas of the paintings.

My work is influenced by the abstract art scene that came out of New York in the sixties and seventies – artists such as Gottlieb, Motherwell and Newman. I am also influenced by Doug Haynes, Robert Sinclair and Jack Bush.

My paintings are meant to be viewed in their entirety; it is the interplay of colour and shape, coupled with the painting’s composition, that creates an evocative feeling. Every brush stroke is integral to the cohesion of the whole. – Phill Mann
