Solitudes by Amelia Alcock-White
Amelia Alcock-White’s latest collection of aquatic landscapes depicts a lone figure taking refuge in secluded coastal surroundings. By juxtaposing light and dark, fire and water, with nature’s beauty and fragility, the images suggest the interrelation of personal awareness and environmental consciousness. Loose brushwork and the viscous texture of the oils reconstruct the vibrant wild of the west coast.

Alcock-White was born on Vancouver Island and studied art at Vancouver Island University, Emily Carr Institute and Columbus State University. This is her fourth solo exhibit, having shown over the last ten years in Vancouver, New York, LA, San Francisco, and Toronto. Her first public art museum exhibition is due to open in 2016. Her last body of work, Water Born, 2012 explored the longing of all parts to reunite with the whole. “As the water vapour in a rainbow eventually returns to the sea so might the spark of individual life return to its fiery source.”
In her current work, Alcock-White revisits water and finds through its holographic nature an apt metaphor for her quest into life’s perplexities. She pursues her concern for the environment with an ongoing project called Painting for Change which benefits ocean conservation initiatives. The rugged coasts of BC and the magic of its ancient forests all find their way onto her canvases.
