Capture Photography Festival is devoted to exhibiting challenging and thought-provoking photography from local and international artists.
Rodrigo Sarrat-Cave began his photographic career in the darkroom of the Photographic Society at the University of British Columbia. The analog chemical process provided ample opportunities for experimentation, as well as cementing the foundations of photography. The shift from analog to digital image-making inspired Rodrigo to begin exploring the idea of fragmenting the real world with the camera and reconstructing it with digital tools.
In his latest work Rodrigo blends multiple images of a scene to create urban deconstructions that shift reality into ambiguous incomplete puzzles. The imaging process requires precision in one hand and serendipity in the other. Exploiting the boundaries of photo editing software has allowed Rodrigo to find new tools to manifest his vision.
Rodrigo recently retired from commercial photography to pursue personal projects. His work has been exhibited in galleries and public venues in British Columbia and is part of both private and corporate collections.
I have always felt a strong connection to the natural world. As a young adult, I took solo canoe excursions into the rugged Canadian Shield exploring and documenting the unaltered infinite forms of Northern Ontario. From then I continued my journeys across Canada for the next twenty years, chronicling the changing light on the land. In 2012, I surrendered the use of colour to immerse myself in the simplicity and timeless expression of black and white photography. Working exclusively with an 8 x 10 large format camera, I continued to photograph familiar terrain while also travelling abroad with my camera for the first time in search of other landscapes. I found that monochrome imparted a more elemental expression to my work than I had been able to capture before. Certain images that had eluded me on colour film no matter how many times I returned to them, translated their essence seamlessly into complete works in black and white. As I explored further and my visual awareness strengthened with the slow workings of the 8 X 10 camera, I began to see both animal and human forms materialize in my compositions whether the subject was rock, wood, or water. Abstract patterns that lay hidden from coloured light and understory nestled in rock crevasses expressed their qualities through the monochrome lens.
The selected works included in this group exhibition consist of large scale 30 x 40 inch analog silver gelatin prints from 8 x 10 negatives of work captured in British Columbia, Northern Ontario, and Ireland
I have had a passion for photography since the late 60’s. My first camera was a Minolta 35mm which led to some freelance photography work in Vancouver BC. Since then my extensive travels around the globe allowed me to capture and appreciate rare moments in our rapidly changing world. The last few years I have also enjoyed photographing sailing races as being on the water is one of my greatest joys in life. I strive to find a narrative in the images I shoot so the viewer can interpret a story that goes on past the initial viewing.
My images have been used in travel brochures, newspapers, magazines, tourism, CD covers, A&M records and Bryan Adams.
I have lived in British Columbia, Michigan, Manitoba and currently reside on Vancouver Island one of the most beautiful places on earth.
Absorbed by the Landscape
Landscape is more than where I live. It is what surrounds me, where I go to find tranquility, inspiration and what often absorbs me body and soul.
This project was designed to bring together some of my beautiful places in the Interlake region with the special women I’ve met here. I chose to use real women, not models and none of the participants had ever posed in the nude.
In the beginning, I approached this series with a photographer’s eye inspired by the beauty and softness of a woman’s body in context with the landscape. Quickly I discovered this to be a powerful and very personal experience tor myself and the women involved. Each woman’s unspoken story is embedded in the images. These photographs embody the visible features of the land with the often hidden, private landscape of the women’s bodies … a visual heartbeat of being absorbed by the landscape.
